Food waste to low-carbon biofuel
Using proven technologies we
convert food waste into low-carbon transport
biofuel and renewable power. We also generate
and use renewable heat.Scarab is a new business meeting the increasing demand for energy from sustainable sources. Scarab is backed and supported by some of the most successful and respected names in renewable fuel and food waste recovery.
-
Distributed energy production
Scarab will deliver efficiencies in waste supply
chains, as well as reducing carbon emissions. We believe that it is uneconomic to transport high volumes of food waste to large centralised facilities. By locating smaller facilities closer to the source of food waste we make them more cost effective. We make transport more efficient by processing the food waste into lower volumes of high value products before further movement to the point of use.
-
Converting a range
of food waste
into bioethanol
Scarab’s initial projects will use the established and proven Etanolix technology to convert carbohydrate rich feedstocks into bioethanol. The sale of all Scarab’s low-carbon bioethanol, which is used as a renewable transport fuel is underwritten by Greenergy, the UK’s largest fuel retailer with one of Europe’s biggest waste to biofuel footprints.
-
Flexible fuel CHP
using standard
diesel engines
One of Scarab’s founding investors, Aquafuel, has developed and patented a unique award winning technology for conventional diesel engines to run on any liquid fuel, automatically adjusting to changes in fuel type. This technology offers CHP operators a flexible solution to provide the lowest fuel cost to energy generation ratio and at capital costs similar to standard equipment.

Scarab market facts
- Around 8 million tonnes per annum of food waste available in the UK for treatment. Existing treatment capacity is estimated at 1.5 million tonnes per annum (source Eunomia July 2011).
- The value of a Renewable Energy Certificate (ROC) for the period to 31st March 2012 is £38.69 per MWhr. Scarab focuses on technologies attracting double ROC’s.
- Transport accounts for 25% of the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions.
- In 2010/11, UK petrol & diesel sales were 46 billion litres (26 billion diesel and 20 billion petrol). Biofuels were 1.55 billion litres (3.35%) of these sales.
- Scarab’s biofuel saves 80% of the greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional transport fuels. That’s around 3 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent saved for every tonne of bioethanol consumed.
