Scarab market facts

  • Around 8 million tonnes per annum of food waste available in the UK for treatment. Existing treatment capacity is estimated at 1.5 million tonnes per annum (source Eunomia July 2011).
  • The value of a Renewable Energy Certificate (ROC) for the period to 31st March 2012 is £38.69 per MWhr. Scarab focuses on technologies attracting double ROC’s.
  • Transport accounts for 25% of the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions.
  • In 2010/11, UK petrol & diesel sales were 46 billion litres (26 billion diesel and 20 billion petrol). Biofuels were 1.55 billion litres (3.35%) of these sales.
  • Scarab’s biofuel saves 80% of the greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional transport fuels. That’s around 3 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent saved for every tonne of bioethanol consumed.
